Chalk Dust is a fairly new duet, but the two members, Kathy Scarborough and Chuck Selfe, each have an extensive musical history.  Both have been members of several successful bands and musical groups performing in the mid-Atlantic area. In addition, they are both holding down the steady gig of being musical educators.   It is this collection of rich musical experiences as well as their diverse musical backgrounds that make Chalk Dust an exceptional act in its own right.

Kathy Scarborough has played for over 20 years in the Baltimore music scene. She started as an acoustic soloist/guitarist/keyboardist playing in virtually every acoustic venue there was around. She ventured on to performing with Debi Bell in a local duo Bell and Wilhelm and eventually added bassist Gary Waugh to become the group Half Crazy". She later played in New Town, a variety band and most recently with the Starleigh group Tony Berry and New Money.  In addition to playing with Chalk Dust, she also plays keys for Release.  During the day she is a music teacher in Harford County , Maryland developing the talents of the next generation of performers.

Chuck Selfe started his musical career at the other end of the musical spectrum.  During the 80’s Chuck was the guitarist for several metal / hard rock bands playing in the Baltimore area including Panic and Falkyn.  In the early 90’s Chuck and former Falkyn lead singer Don Bradford formed the duet Shy Piranha, which did well in the area for several years much to their knack for performing acoustic versions of heavy metal material.  Chuck then focused on working as a solo act and developing original material.  In 2003 Chuck released In the Face of Logic and he is currently working on material for his second release.   Chuck also teaches in Harford County , Maryland , though he and his family reside in southern Pennsylvania .

As one might judge from Chalk Dust’s song list, they are not the typical acoustic duo.  They strive to set themselves apart by performing material that most other duets would probably not attempt and that most patrons coming out to hear an acoustic duet would probably not expect.  Yes, they do all the “old standards” of the acoustic genre when requested but it has become the new, or adapted material such as Human League’s Don’t You Want Me Baby or Joe Jackson’s Is She Really Going out with Him? that fans have come to appreciate and often request.

While most duos usually have two guitar players, Kathy and Chuck, both of whom are talented guitar players, are also able to add keyboards, bass, harmonica, and percussion when appropriate.  They are not a MIDI act; everything is played live.  It is not unusual for Chuck and Kathy to switch instrumentation several times within one set (which they do seamlessly).  Being able to do this keeps things fresh and interesting plus it allows the duo to constantly push their repertoire in new and challenging directions.
